As the agency’s CEO, Evita Zhang sees outstanding success within the APAC CEO of the Year Awards 2022 we take a closer look at the creative work she and her team does. With its joint-venture, Poly Armstrong, Armstrong International Music and Arts Enterprises Ltd (Armstrong) is also a production company, which has produced San Francisco Opera’s Dream of the Red Chamber (touring version of China), China’s 2021 top three box office dance production – Magical Night at the Art Museum – Tan Yuanyuan and her friends, and more. It has an extensive global network of relationships with major orchestras, festivals, theatres and governments. Having spent 13 years operating in China, and working with top names, Armstrong Music and Arts has become the leading classical music and arts agency. It has established a very strong reputation – with theatres knowing they can always expect the very best. Armstrong is a major provider of performances for many theatres in China, including the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Poly Group’s theatres, China Performing Arts Agency group’s theatres, etc. It also boasts more than 200 performances in China every year. It carries out the government’s cultural diplomacy strategy of connecting cultures. Touring, artist management, production, exhibitions, consulting, video streaming, music education, and travel all fall under the company’s vast domain and expertise. In addition to working with an array of talented music artists, Armstrong also produces shows such as San Francisco Opera’s ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’ (touring version of China) and one of China’s 2021 top three box office dance productions, ‘Magical Night at the Art Museum’ with Tan Yuanyuan and her friends. It also enjoys an extensive global network of relationships with major orchestras, theatres, and governments. In 2019, Armstrong jointly established the Poly Armstrong International Arts and Communications Co., Ltd with Beijing Poly Theatre Management Co. Ltd, resulting in a bridge of culture investment that enables mergers, acquisitions, co-productions, and high-quality performances for Poly’s 73 theatres in major cities of China and their related governments. In recent years, Armstrong has started to introduce the best of China to the world, too. ‘Magical Night at the Art Museum’ is one of Poly Armstrong’s most recent project right now and includes a significant tour. It gives young dancers, under the mentorship of a leading maestro dancer and world’s famous creative team, the opportunity to create their own choreographies of short new works which become part of the full evening production. The first round of the tour received more than 40 performance invitations in 2021, and the second round’s new tour is planned to premiere at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre this autumn. Armstrong actively builds bridges between Chinese and foreign cultures through the power of music and arts with the best quality of classical music, opera, musicals, dance, and more. CEO, Evita Zhang says, “We believe in the power of music and arts and don’t want culture to come behind finance, trading, and construction, as the arts are actually the best soft power to connect people if you respect it and use it well. In fact, in most of our big international projects, culture facilitated trading and other business. We have been highly involved in high-end culture dialogue, and we have culture diplomacy projects between China and the U.K., U.S., Poland, Czech Republic, Israel, and more.” Indeed, Armstrong is a company devoted to collaboration, open communication, and its firm belief that the power of music transcends borders. Therefore, when it comes to recruiting new staff, it is preferred that individuals have a background in music and arts, but it’s not the most important element. Instead, it values moral qualities, ownership, and empathy more than anything, since it is in a people business, after all. Evita states, “If you want to be outstanding, curious, targetoriented, and persistent, delayed gratification and working hard enables you to go far and high. These shared values allow us to work together cohesively and effectively.” There’s no denying that the team at Armstrong is an ambitious and creative one; in addition to its ‘Magical Night at the Art Museum’ project in the autumn, this August the company is hosting an immersive exhibition about the elements from five books by Jimmy Liao who has written and illustrated over 60 books in 20+ languages. The Armstrong team is working with an amazing creative team for this, including Taiwan Golden Melody Awards composer, Chen Jian Qi; the scene designer from the ‘Life of Pi’, Chenhui; and more. It is clear to see that Armstrong Music and Arts is making waves for music and arts while touching the hearts of many.
