In 1989, family-owned business RP Progression Engineering was born when Michael and Janis Judge decided to purchase a shelf company and begin a new chapter of their lives. Initially, the pair ran the business out of their home, only taking on site work, until they were able to begin renting a unit in Smithfield. In 1993, Michael and Jan’s son, Heath, joined RP Progression Engineering as a boiler making apprentice. Soon after, the company welcomed the couple’s daughter, Michelle, who first took on a role in accounts before starting her apprenticeship in Engineering Drafting. Later, she went on to pursue further study in Mechanical Engineering. Eight years ago, Michael and Jan decided to retire to the Gold Coast, handing over the reins at RP Progression Engineering to Heath. Michelle went with them but continued to work for the company from home, flying back to Sydney once a month. Following in his father’s footsteps, Heath’s son, Seth, started his apprenticeship in boiler making seven years ago and has now been a fully qualified boilermaker for four years. Today, RP Progression Engineering offers a range of products and services, specialising in the fabrication and installation of platforms, mezzanine floors, stairs and walkways, access ladders, hoppers, tanks, pipe work, and ducting. As well as this, it provides structural steel fabrication and installation services to residential, industrial, and commercial properties. The company also offers handrailing, balustrading, screens, and safety cages, as well as relocation and maintenance services for machinery, equipment, and even full production lines. As a family-owned company, RP Progression Engineering prioritises its staff members above anything else, looking after them and treating them like family. The company understands that its work is only as good as its employees, so it focuses on providing them with the training and support they require. The company is proud to have been recognised in this awards programme since, to the Judge family, the term “Australian made” is synonymous with quality. It believes that, whilst not everything is manufactured or available in Australia, it is important to source locally as often as possible. For this reason, it uses BHP steel rather than imported steel and aims to source other materials and products from local businesses. In the years to come, RP Progression Engineering plans to maintain the relationships it has built with its current customers whilst continuing to grow by obtaining new customers. In addition to this, it hopes to be able to offer training to upcoming school leavers, equipping them with the skills required to keep the manufacturing process going in Australia.
