Most Engaging Piano Teacher 2023 Professional Singapore-based piano teacher, Jenny Soh provides piano lessons and music theory lessons to adults and children alike, starting from complete beginners right up to tutoring people to teach piano, too! Jenny, who used to be a concert pianist, has a master’s degree in music and has more than 15 years of teaching experience in piano performance. Using her teaching experience and passion for music, Jenny diligently guides students to master the instrument and the music in her piano classes. She also enjoys sharing musical knowledge, which helps her students appreciate piano music further. Her interest in music was rewarded when she garnered the highly sought-after Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Diploma in 2001. Soon thereafter, Jenny continued her studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, where she emerged as the best pianist in her class during the 2003 graduation recital. She also obtained the prestigious Lee Foundation scholarship to further her studies at the University of Wales in 2004. Over the next two years, Jenny did her Master’s degree in Hamburg, Germany, at the Johannes Brahms Music Konservatory, under renowned Russian pianist, Irina Kolesnikova. Her study in Hamburg proved to be a great success, with two acclaimed recitals, where she obtained a distinction in her graduation assessment. Among Jenny’s tutors are renowned musicians such as Mr Miles Choi Kim Mun, Ms. Hau Ping Ping from Malaysia, homegrown, talented pianist Mr. Ong Lip Tat, as well as Professors Irina Kolesnikova and Manfred Fock from Germany. In addition, she has attended master classes with renowned American pianist, Professor Ruth Slencynsky. Today, as a seasoned performer, Jenny dedicates her music knowledge to a successful teaching career in Singapore. Besides providing preparation for piano exams, Jenny also organises piano concerts for her students at the Esplanade every year. Jenny’s students are from many different countries, including Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, and Japan. Besides providing lessons, music teachers and students also visit her YouTube channel for free music theory lessons and to gain valuable tips on music composition. Many of Jenny’s subscribers have benefited from her videos and her YouTube channel has grown to become a useful resource for music lessons. Jenny also runs a music school which offers one-year online crash course for music theory and ABRSM piano diploma classes in Singapore, conducted mainly in Jenny’s home studios and through Zoom. This idea was born when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and the world had to find innovative ways to continue in their daily lives. For this course, Jenny’s students are predominantly music teachers who are looking for self-improvement. Besides music theory, many students also approached Jenny for her diploma piano lessons during the pandemic period and have since become qualified piano teachers and gone on to build their music schools. More recently, Jenny won the first prize in the La Pianista International Piano Competition open category in 2021, an annually held piano competition where pianists showcase their performances. Five of her students have also won second to fourth prizes in this competition. One of her music theory students Oliver Lim has won multiple Xing Kong Xia Chinese song writing competitions in Singapore. She was also recognised in the Singapore Business Awards when she was named Most Engaging Piano Teacher 2023 – A very highly sought-after accolade and a testament to all the hard work that Jenny has put in to developing her piano school over the years.
